Summer Camp Gets Sew Glamorous

July 15, 2011

Julie Forrest sports a scarf created by the girls at Summer at Santa Catalina

Today I have the pleasure of wearing a très chic scarf created by our campers.

I’ve gotten tons of compliments from friends so far, and it’s not even lunchtime yet!

The girls who made it are in our Sew Glamorous class, a new offering this year.  The class gives girls a chance to reinterpret previously used materials into creative and fashionable garments and accessories. Campers are wildly taking bicycle tires and making rubber bracelets and hair ornaments. They’re making rosettes out of zippers. They’re flattening bottle caps and repurposing them into bespoke necklaces.

Campers at Summer at Santa Catalina exercise creativity in Sew Glamorous classWe hope they’re enjoying the opportunity to look at the world and the things we throw away in a different light. Sew, Sew, Sew fun!

And they’re learning practical life skills: how to do cross-stitch embroidery, how to cut patterns, how to edge and make seams, how to add zippers to garments, and how to take things like ties and make coin pursues out of them.

Taking the boring and mundane and making it fresh is a skill we always hope kids will take into their adult lives.
